Business and industry leaders join forces as new crime solving ambassadors

Posted on 25/05/2020

Crime Stoppers South Australia is pleased to announce that several of South Australia’s top-level business and industry leaders have joined forces to become the organisation’s very first group of Ambassadors.

Crime Stoppers South Australia Chair, Ms Sharon Hanlon, confirmed that Andrew Marshall, President of the Master Builders Association, Philip Morton, Managing Director of Morton Philips, Jodie van Deventer, CEO for the Committee for Adelaide and Martin Haese, CEO at Business SA had all taken on the challenge of being Crime Stoppers SA Ambassadors.

“We have been very particular in approaching and appointing people of high-standing and respect within the South Australian community, whose own values and goals align and complement those of Crime Stoppers. We couldn’t ask for a more impressive group in our four inaugural Ambassadors,” Ms Hanlon said.

“We look forward to our Crime Stoppers Ambassadors promoting our organisation within their established networks, encourage local businesses to put their support behind us, and unite to be part of a safer South Australia,” she said.

“As a charity that has always self-funded our own operations, rewards and crime prevention campaigns we need to think smarter about how we can open doors and attract new partners – and we hope our Ambassadors will prove to be the secret weapon in our efforts to stay sustainable so we can continue to offer people a way to share what they know about unsolved crime and suspicious activity without saying who they are.”

The launch of an Ambassador program follows a number of unsuccessful approaches to State Government by Crime Stoppers for funding assistance to cover costs associated with hosting its hotline, website, and rewards program, with a number of crime solving and awareness campaigns now put on hold.

In 2019, information provided by the community to Crime Stoppers directly led to police stopping more than 33,000 amphetamine deals and 32,000 cannabis street deals, 103 firearms and an arsenal of illegal and dangerous weapons seized, and more than 300 contacts from people sharing information about some of SA’s most violent and unsolved cold case murders.

“We are proud that we can provide a way for people to share what they know about unsolved crimes and all types of suspicious activity without having to say who they are or get any further involved. Our results reinforce the very real contribution that Crime Stoppers SA continues to make to the safety of South Australians and demonstrate our ability to deliver world-leading initiatives despite limited financial resources,” Ms Hanlon said.

“We look forward to our four new Ambassadors helping us attract a range of new partners who understand and recognise the value that comes with partnering with Crime Stoppers to deliver benchmark crime-solving campaigns in the years ahead.”

Underpinning the success of Crime Stoppers in South Australia is a positive, long-term partnership with SA Police, while 9 News Adelaide continues as a long-standing media partner. In 2017 Police Credit Union was announced as a major funding partner.
