Do you know who killed Mark Williams?

Posted on 10/04/2017

Mark Williams was a quiet, nice man. The 37-year-old was a bit of a loner who was an avid cyclist. He lived alone, was single and kept himself to himself, which made his shooting death all the more inexplicable to police.

The invalid pensioner, who suffered from a number of medical conditions, was shot dead at his Myrtle Bank flat about 1.40am on Sunday 28 July 2002 and his killer has never been identified.

Police believe Mr Williams was using his computer at his Moorhouse Ave home and got up to answer a knock at the door when the two fatal shots were fired from a shotgun.

He was shot through the window next to the unit’s front door and died at the scene. In the moments that followed a silver car was seen speeding away towards Glen Osmond Rd.

This unsolved murder is one of the cases being reviewed as part of Operation Persist – an ongoing, long-running, targeted operation led by the SA Police Major Crime Investigation Branch.

The Operation is focused on unsolved ‘cold case’ murders or disappearances which are considered sinister.

Detective Sergeant Bryan Mitchell, from Major Crime, said investigators have identified a person of interest in connection with the case, but believe others may have intimate knowledge of what occurred early that morning.

“This was not a random event,” he said. “And I would strongly urge anyone with information about this shooting to come forward and talk with us.

“There is a reward of $200,000 available for anyone providing information leading to the apprehension and conviction of a person for Mr Williams’ murder.

“We know that relationships and loyalties can change over time, but what doesn’t change is this family’s grief.

“Mark’s mum phones me every year on the anniversary of his death and we would love to be able to give her some answers.

“Like many unsolved cases, we believe that there is someone out there with intimate knowledge of this case who can give this family some peace.”

Mr Williams had only been home for a matter of weeks after cycling around the Northern Territory and Western Australia.

He set out in November 2001, and only returned home to Adelaide on 9 June 2002 after his bicycle was stolen in Broome.

Just weeks later this quiet loner was shot dead.

The murder was featured in the Sunday Mail today, as police renew their appeal for information in connection with the investigation.

“Cases like this are never ‘closed’,” Detective Sergeant Mitchell said. “We know that one piece of key information can make all the difference.”

Anyone with information about this murder is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report online at https://crimestopperssa.com.au/ – callers can remain anonymous, with information treated with the strictest confidence.
