Andrew Mordowicz, 43 years, was a taxi driver working for United Yellow Cabs. On Sunday, 29th September, 1996, a telephone call to United Yellow Cabs ordered a taxi fare to be collected at 4.30 am at 78 Fife Street, Klemzig. The booking tasking was sent out on the computerized taxi system and Andrew Mordowicz accepted the tasking. On attending the address the house was in darkness and unbeknown to Andrew the house was unoccupied at the time. As no person approached the taxi he informed the radio controller he would knock on the door.
At some point between either leaving his taxi or walking back to his taxi Andrew was confronted by the offender/s during which three shots were fired, two of which struck and killed Andrew. It is believed the incident was a “robbery gone wrong”. It was not believed to have been a targeted hit as the computer is a random acceptance by a number of drivers operating in the area at the time. The address in Fife Street, Klemzig abuts Linear Park/River Torrens. The isolated location would explain the lack of witnesses as to the movements of cars or people, as the offender/s more than likely left the scene via Linear Park.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, report online or via the App.
