Karen Morton, aged 35 years, was living with her partner and their two children when she went missing from her Pennington home on 9 February 2002. She was reported missing by her father on 27 May 2002, who was also the last to see her.

Ms Morton was an insulin dependent diabetic and was addicted to heroin. She suffered frequent hypo glycaemic attacks as she did not appropriately manage her condition. She also prostituted herself to fund her drug habit.
