CASE PROFILE – Deborah Westmacott

Posted on 24/01/2021

Deborah Westmacott was an English tourist who had been in Australia for about 12 months on a working holiday.

On the evening of Thursday 24 January 1991, the 25-year old joined friends for her farewell dinner at the Happy Place Chinese Restaurant in Gouger Street, Adelaide.

She was due to return to England the next day.

At about 10.45pm she left friends inside the restaurant to make several telephone calls from a nearby public telephone box. The telephone box was west of the restaurant and on the opposite side of the street in front of 200-206 Gouger Street, which was occupied at the time by Tonkin’s Car Audio. She was carrying a small envelope sized Balinese type bag/purse.

About 15 minutes later, patrons in the restaurant heard a scream and found Ms Westmacott on the footpath doubled over and holding her stomach.

She had been stabbed.

She was treated at the Royal Adelaide Hospital but died from her injuries at about 1.15am on Friday 25 January 1991.

A $200,000 remains on offer to anyone who provides information that leads to a conviction in this case.

It is never too late to speak up and share what you know.
