What happened to Michael Modesti?
Posted on 06/08/2018
As part of National Missing Persons Week, a renewed appeal has been made for information to help solve the baffling disappearance and suspected murder of Michael Modesti in 2016.
A devoted father-of-one and family man, the 33-year-old was not considered to be a hardened criminal and didn’t appear to be living beyond his means, although he had some minor involvement with cannabis over the years.
Among the theories considered when he first went missing was that he might have had an accident while checking on a hydroponic crop being grown at a residential property near to where his car was located.
However, an extensive search of the area, including the use of heat seeking technology in a bid to identify hydroponic crops, failed to find any sign of him.
Investigators believe Mr Modesti has been the victim of homicide as a result of getting involved in the drug trade.
A $200,000 reward is available for anyone who provides information leading to the apprehension and/or conviction of the person or people responsible for the disappearance and suspected murder of Mr Modesti, and/or leading to the location and recovery of his remains.
Investigators have a suspect who was an associate of Mr Modesti and they believe they were in a drug enterprise together, possibly with links overseas.
That associate was due to go to Thailand with him only a short time before Mr Modesti’s disappearance, but he pulled out of that trip. Mr Modesti disappeared only days after returning from Thailand, with investigators suspecting some sort of drug involvement in the Thailand trip, possibly importation of methalyamphetamine or a precursor drug.
Mr Modesti went missing after leaving his home address at Willsmore Street, Beverley at 8.15am on Monday, 9 May 2016.
There is no evidence of a disturbance at his home address, with his phone and wallet found at the locked property, the blinds up, dishes in the sink and the TV on.
His blue Magna 360 model sedan was found two days later parked and abandoned in Chenoweth Avenue, West Croydon, near Torrens Road.
