CASE PROFILE – Lily Jean Schettini

Lily Jean Schettini died in 2010 from blunt head trauma after being shaken or assaulted.

The 18-month old little girl was found unresponsive in a bedroom she shared with her three-year-old sister on Tuesday 1 June 2010.

She is believed to have died as a result of an injury inflicted by one of four adults who spent the night at her Smithfield Plains home.

Lily lived at the home with her sister, her mother and her mother’s de facto partner, but on the night she died there were two visitors also at the address — a man and a woman.

Lily’s mother and a female friend left the house at 9.30am on the Tuesday morning, leaving Lily and her older sister in the care of the two males.

Both children were in the same bedroom, in separate beds, at that time. About 11.30am one of the males left the house.

Lily was found ‘unresponsive’ in her bed by the remaining male at about 12.30pm.

Neighbours attempted to revive the little girl and an ambulance was called. A post-mortem confirmed that she had died of head trauma but the exact time the injury was inflicted remains unknown.

The man who found her told police he heard crying coming from the bedroom an hour earlier and had changed Lily’s nappy. She was conscious at that time.

While the injury that killed her could have been inflicted late on the previous evening, police believe it is more likely she was injured on the morning she was found.

A reward of up to $1m is on offer for information that leads to a conviction in this case.
