On 3 August 1990 Ms Williams spent time with friends and associates at the Opal Inn at Coober Pedy before attending at a private party at nearby Sergio’s Restaurant in the early hours of the morning on Saturday 4 August 1990.

Between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. Karen and three friends were picked up in a car and driven to the vicinity of Medway Drive, Coober Pedy where the three other people got out of the vehicle. Karen and her associate then left north along Dawes Street. A short time later Ms Williams and her associate were seen in a vehicle at the Caltex Service Station, Coober Pedy. They then left the service station and drove south along Hutchinson Street before turning left onto the Stuart Highway. Ms Williams has never been seen since.

In 2016, Ms Williams associate was acquitted of Ms Williams’s murder.
