New campaign encourages South Australians to speak up – anonymously

Posted on 16/04/2025

Crime Stoppers South Australia has launched a new campaign reminding people that if something doesn’t feel right, they can say something – and stay anonymous while doing it.

Whether it’s suspicious behaviour, an unsolved crime or just a gut feeling that something’s off, the campaign encourages everyday South Australians to trust their instincts and share what they know. You don’t need to have hard evidence or be 100% sure — even a small piece of information can help police prevent or solve a crime.

Our message is simple: your identity doesn’t matter – your information does.

“Sometimes people hold back from speaking up because they’re worried they’ll have to go to court, deal with police directly, or get drawn into something they don’t want to be part of,” said Crime Stoppers SA CEO, Nigel Smart.

“But Crime Stoppers is here to take that pressure away. We provide a safe way for people to report information – anonymously if the prefer – and we pass it on to police on their behalf.”

The campaign, which will be delivered across South Australia over coming weeks, features digital advertising, social media content and posters in regional and metropolitan areas.

What does anonymous really mean?

When you contact Crime Stoppers:

  • Your call isn’t recorded or traced
  • Your online report doesn’t capture your IP address
  • You don’t need to give your name, contact details or anything that might identify you

As long as you choose not to share those things, your identity stays completely hidden – and if your tip leads to an arrest or the recovery of property, you could even be eligible for a reward.

Share what you know

To pass on information, visit www.crimestopperssa.com.au or call 1800 333 000.

“You might think what you know isn’t much, but it could be exactly what’s needed,” said Mr Smart.

“Don’t second-guess yourself. If something doesn’t feel right, let us know. We’ll take it from there.”

Know the numbers

In Australia, 000 is the main emergency service number for urgent help from police, fire or ambulance services and should be used when someone is seriously injured or in need of urgent medical help, the caller’s life or property is being threatened or they just witnessed a serious accident or crime.

The 131 444 Police Assistance number should be used when someone is a victim of a crime, and in circumstances that are not life-threatening or a time-critical emergency. The Police Assistance Line operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and allows someone to report a crime and make general police inquiries. When a police response is required, the Police Assistance Line will arrange for a patrol to attend.

When someone has seen, heard or knows something about a crime or suspicious activity that is no longer happening, they can contact Crime Stoppers by going to https://crimestopperssa.com.au or calling 1800 333 000.
