YOUNG AUSTRALIANS ARE READY TO SPEAK UP

Posted on 18/08/2026

To mark national Crime Stoppers Day (18 August 2026), Crime Stoppers has launched a new national campaign encouraging younger South Australians to protect what matters most to them by safely and anonymously sharing what they’ve noticed.

Developed specifically for Australians aged 18–39, the campaign was informed by independent national research commissioned by Crime Stoppers Australia.

The research found almost one in five Australians aged 18–39 (19%) had either previously contacted Crime Stoppers (13%) or had considered doing so (6%). It also found younger Australians were less likely than older age groups to understand how Crime Stoppers works, including that information can be shared anonymously. Encouragingly, the research found simple explanations about the Crime Stoppers service significantly increased confidence and willingness to report.

Crime Stoppers South Australia Chair, Phil Vincent, said the findings challenged the perception that younger Australians are disengaged from community safety.

“One of the most encouraging findings from the research was that almost one in five young Australians had either already contacted Crime Stoppers or had seriously considered doing so,” Mr Vincent said.

“That tells us younger Australians care about the people, places and causes that matter to them. They’re paying attention, and many are already thinking about how they can make a positive difference.”

“Our job is now making sure young Australians know they can safely and anonymously share what they’ve noticed, without needing proof or putting themselves at risk.”

“One of the biggest things we want younger Australians to know is that you don’t need proof. You don’t need all the answers. If something doesn’t feel right, you can safely and anonymously share what you’ve noticed. That small piece of information could help complete a much bigger picture.”

“The research also showed something really encouraging. When people understood how Crime Stoppers works, they became significantly more confident about using the service. That’s exactly what this campaign is designed to achieve.”

At the heart of the campaign is a simple message: Protect what matters most to you. Anonymously.

Mr Vincent said the campaign reflects Crime Stoppers Australia’s commitment to evolving alongside younger Australians and engaging them in ways that are relevant, accessible and authentic.

“Young Australians are digital natives. They connect, communicate and engage with the world differently to previous generations, and Crime Stoppers is committed to evolving alongside them,” he said.

“Whether it’s protecting someone you care about, looking after the places that matter to you or standing up for a cause you believe in, you don’t need to have all the answers. If something doesn’t feel right, Crime Stoppers gives you a safe and anonymous way to share what you’ve noticed.”

Every year, Australians anonymously share thousands of pieces of information with Crime Stoppers, helping police prevent and solve crime, disrupt criminal activity and keep communities safe.

The campaign uses gaming-inspired creative, digital-first storytelling and social media to connect with younger Australians.
