Beat the burglar – property protection campaign
Posted on 29/03/2026
Why “smart criminals” are mostly a myth!
Movies love a mastermind.
The perfectly planned heist. The criminal genius who thinks ten steps ahead of police and victims.
Real life? Not so much.
Most property crime isn’t sophisticated – it’s opportunistic.
It happens when someone notices an unlocked door, an open window, or an easy way in … and takes the chance.
That’s why so many criminals are portrayed as a bit clueless – because often, they are.
They’re not looking for a challenge. They’re looking for an opportunity.
The good news? That means a few simple steps can make a real difference.
Keeping your home safe
You don’t need to turn your home into a fortress – just make it a little harder than the next option.
- Lock up – even when you’re home.
It sounds obvious, but many break-ins happen through unlocked doors and windows. - Secure all entry points.
Doors, windows, garages and side gates all matter. If it opens, it should lock. - Keep keys out of sight.
Keys, remotes and spare keys left in the open can make things far too easy. - Store tools and equipment safely.
Ladders and tools can be just as useful to someone trying to get in. - Maintain visibility around your home.

Overgrown bushes and trees can create easy hiding spots. - Make your home look lived in.
If you’re away, a neighbour collecting mail or putting bins out can help. - Dispose of packaging thoughtfully.
New TV box out the front? That’s an invitation. Break it down and keep it out of sight. - Store valuables securely.
If it’s not visible, it’s far less likely to be targeted.
Keeping your business secure
Public holidays like Easter can mean quieter streets, shorter hours and fewer staff – all things that can create opportunity.
- Lock up properly – every time
Even short closures can be enough.
- Manage cash and valuables carefully
Remove or secure anything that’s easy to take. - Keep security systems active
Alarms and cameras only help if they’re on and working. - Control access
Limit who has keys, codes or swipe access – and update them when needed. - Keep entry points visible and well-lit
Good lighting and clear sightlines make a difference. - Secure stock and equipment
Don’t leave valuable items out in the open. - Plan ahead for closures
Pause deliveries or arrange collection so it doesn’t look unattended. - Look out for each other

Neighbouring businesses keeping an eye out can go a long way.
Mark and record your valuables
If something is stolen, being able to identify it makes recovery far more likely.
- Engrave valuables where possible, or use a UV pen or microdot system
- Mark items with your driver’s licence number (include ‘SA’ as our state prefix)
- Photograph jewellery and high-value items
- Record serial numbers and keep them somewhere safe
See something that doesn’t feel right?
Trust your instincts. If something seems off around your home, workplace or neighbourhood, you can report it anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online.
Most break-ins aren’t clever. They’re convenient.
Make things just a little less convenient – and you’re already one step towards beating the burglars.
