Protect your parcels this Black Friday and Christmas season
Posted on 13/11/2025
With Black Friday deals dropping and Christmas just around the corner, plenty of South Australians are gearing up for one of the busiest online shopping periods of the year. But while we’re busy filling digital carts, thieves are keeping an eye out too – and parcel theft is becoming a growing concern across the state.
Over the past year, reports of parcels being taken from doorsteps, porches, and apartment lobbies have jumped by nearly 70% in South Australia, with noticeable spikes during major sales events and the lead-up to Christmas. With more deliveries on the move, opportunistic thieves see an easy chance to strike.
Crime Stoppers South Australia is encouraging the community to take a few simple steps to help keep those hard-earned purchases safe.
Be home, or arrange to collect
If possible, arrange deliveries for a time when you or someone you trust will be home. Many retailers now offer the option to nominate delivery windows or provide authority to leave
packages in a secure, hidden location.
Use secure delivery options
Parcel lockers, staffed collection points, and signature-on-delivery services are safe alternatives that prevent packages being left unattended. They’re perfect for gift season, when you know you won’t be home to collect.
Collect promptly
Thieves often act within minutes. If you receive a delivery notification, pick up your parcel as soon as you can — especially during this high-volume period.
Stay alert in your street
If you notice someone following delivery vehicles, loitering
around letterboxes, or checking doorsteps, report it to police immediately on 131 444.
Speak up anonymously
If you know someone involved in parcel theft or have information that could help, share what you know anonymously with Crime Stoppers by calling 1800 333 000 or make a report via our website. You don’t have to say who you are – and your information could prevent further victims.
As we head into the busiest shopping season of the year, a little extra awareness can make a big difference. Protect your parcels, protect your neighbourhood, and help stop thieves from turning festive deliveries into expensive losses.
