Unsolved murder of Robert (Mark) Woodland – 20 years without answers
Posted on 05/12/2024
It has been two decades since the tragic murder of Robert (Mark) Woodland, and the circumstances surrounding his death remain a painful mystery for his loved ones. At just 36, Mark’s life was abruptly and violently taken. Now, with advanced forensic testing bringing new hope for answers, Crime Stoppers South Australia urges anyone with information to come forward, anonymously if they choose, and help finally bring justice to Mark and closure to his family.
On 8 December 2004, a member of the public found Mark’s body in the South Parklands, approximately 50 metres west of Sir Lewis Cohen Drive, Adelaide. By then, he had been dead for several days. Mark’s keys, ANZ ATM card, RAA plastic sleeve and jumper were missing from the scene, suggesting these personal belongings may hold clues to his movements and the events leading up to his tragic death.
Police say his ATM card had been used on Gouger Street.
Timeline and key details
Mark Woodland was last seen alive leaving his home in Plympton Park around 9 pm on Saturday, 4 December 2004, driving his blue Commodore sedan (SA registration WYZ-736). His car was later found parked near Veale Gardens, close to the crime scene.
Police received a report that a member of the public saw him in the early hours of Sunday, 5 December 2004. He was alone and appeared untroubled. Sadly, by 6 December 2004, he had been reported missing after failing to return home or show up for work. Days later, his body was discovered in the parklands.
New forensic evidence
DNA evidence has been recovered that has the potential to identify a suspect in the matter. With this promising lead, police hope to uncover more details about the events leading up to Mark’s murder and in particular the person or persons responsible for his death.
Authorities believe someone in the community has vital information about what happened that night and encourages people to think back and remember if they may have had any interactions with Mark, either on the night of his disappearance or in the days leading up to his death.
Reward and anonymous reporting
A reward of up to $200,000 is offered to anyone whose information leads to a conviction in this case. If you, or someone you know, has information that could shed light on Mark Woodland’s murder, you can report it without fear of identification.
